I enjoyed a wonderful course on a methodical approach to family history research. For me, there was a great example of how to use a research log by first creating list of places to search and what to look for. This can be seen at 2:55 min of the lesson video “Creating a Research Plan” (see screenshot below):
As sources are searched, additional items to search can be added below for further research (see screenshot), available at 3:26 of the lesson video “Working the Research Plan” (see screenshot below):
Key take away: Just like following step-by-step directions of your GPS navigation system, continue to search for each item in your plan. You may have found a source that “answers” your research objective; however, it is likely you will find additional sources, including conflicting information. Conclusions are best reserved after analyzing all available sources.
