Pluto Now a “Dwarf Planet”

Bummer for everyone living on Pluto:

Planets and “dwarf planets” shown to scale, but without correct relative distances.

PRAGUE, Czech Republic – Leading astronomers declared Thursday that Pluto is no longer a planet under historic new guidelines that downsize the solar system from nine planets to eight.
After a tumultuous week of clashing over the essence of the cosmos, the International Astronomical Union stripped Pluto of the planetary status it has held since its discovery in 1930. The new definition of what is — and isn’t — a planet fills a centuries-old black hole for scientists who have labored since Copernicus without one.

A friend shared this with me today. I hope it will be said at my funeral that I succeeded, according to this definition:

To laugh often and much;
To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children;
To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends;
To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others;
To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition;
To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.
This is to have succeeded.
— inaccurately attributed to Ralph Waldo Emerson

Dark matter exists

Dark matter and normal matter have been wrenched apart by the tremendous collision of two large clusters of galaxies. The discovery, using NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and other telescopes, gives direct evidence for the existence of dark matter.

“This is the most energetic cosmic event, besides the Big Bang, which we know about,” said team member Maxim Markevitch of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Mass.

I love science. It acheives much. But God knows everything. We should listen to him more often:

There is nosuch thing as immaterial matter. All spirit is matter, but it is morefine or pure, and can only be discerned by purer eyes;

Doctrine and Covenants 131 (Instructions by Joseph Smith the Prophet, given at Ramus, Illinois, May 16 and 17, 1843.)

Note the date of that last quote. <smile />
